Review: The Good Mother by A. L. Bird

the good mother

Wow! Wow! Wow! What a terrifying, amazing, clever and chilling book. I wrote the first draft of this review at 1.40am as I was so stunned by what I just read I needed to get it out of my system on paper. I can honestly say, I have never been more fooled by a book. There is no universe upon which I could have seen the revelations that happened in this book. A. L. Bird has serious talent with words and has created a story that is mind-blowing. Every single detail in this book has been crafted so cleverly to lead up to an explosive ending. Even the writing is used to manipulate the reader, short sharp sentences to sync you with what the character is feeling. The end of this book was terrifying and it will stay with me for a long time.

I can’t say too much about the content of this book because I will take away the experience I just went through for anyone that has yet to read it. What I can say is that this is a psychological novel like no other. It doesn’t just explore the psyche of the protagonist, it has you questioning your own sanity. I feel like I just went through the emotional ringer having read this book. The unpredictability and the not knowing what was happening that the main character experiences are also what I experienced viscerally as the reader. This book is a demonstration of the power of the mind and its abilities. It could also be considered a demonstration of the power of words, as I was left shell-shocked after reading this because everything I thought I knew was wrong. The writing in this book is so vivid and realistic and you become so absorbed in the story that you are blown away by the revelation at the end.

This really is a fantastic book and if you like thrillers and psychological novels then you really have to read this book as A. L. Bird is a terrific writer. This is a powerful novel that will challenge even the most observant of readers. It is released on April 4th and it is a bargain at 99p!
